~Choosing An Insurance Broker~

Choosing the right insurance broker is as important as finding the right insurance.

There is a difference between an insurance broker and an insurance agent. A broker represents you and may choose from the policies of different companies to procure your insurance. An agent usually represents one insurance company.

You should look for a broker who has an understanding of small business and a willingness to find the best coverage for you. Start by asking your friends, family, and colleagues for recommendations.

Next, you should talk to your current insurance company, and see what they have to offer. You can also request a referral from your current agent.

Trade associations related to your business are usually familiar with insurance needs of your industry. Contact them for referrals.

You can also contact small business associations or self-employed associations for referrals.

Check with small insurance companies. Since these are small businesses also, they will understand your coverage needs better.

A good broker will ask a lot of questions about your business and your needs. They should ask more questions than you do. They should be willing to provide you with references also.

You can contact your states Insurance Department for a list of brokers with complaints against them. You can also use this agency to verify that a broker is properly licensed.

Shop around and compare. Remember that brokers will make a commission off the policy that they sell you.
